CDL Training
Alpers Excavating provides Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) services on an as-requested basis. Alpers Excavating is a registered training provider with the DOT FMCSA and meets all requirements for Class A and Class B entry-level driver training. Alpers Excavating does not provide passenger / school bus training or hazmat training.
ELDT is required for all CDL applicants as of February 7, 2022.
At this time, Alpers Excavating provides ELDT services on weekends only.
How do I get a CDL? Here’s how it works:
- Step 1, Schedule an appointment with a doctor’s office that can administer an FMCSA / DOT physical exam. This costs less than $200. Medical insurance will not pay for this!
- Step 2, Go to the Secretary of State for your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). For a Class A permit, you will need to take three tests, the general knowledge test, the air brake test, and the combination vehicle test. Upon passing these tests, you will receive your CLP. The fee is ~$50.
- Step 3, Complete your ELDT requirements with Alpers Excavating. To schedule training, contact Cole Alpers at 231-633-9096. Click here for pricing information.
- Step 4, Schedule a CDL Skills Test through a Third-Party Examiner. This costs less than $200.
- Step 5, Upon passing your skills test, you can go to the Secretary of State office the next day and obtain your Commercial Driver’s License.

-The Theory section consists of all required training as required per §380 appendix A, section A1. There is an online test you will take, and your scores will be submitted to FMCSA. A paper test can be administered if requested.
-The BTW-Range section consists of all required training as required per §380 appendix A, section A2. Your training hours will be uploaded the FMCSA.
